This is an unusual water jar by Marie Z. Chino.  Marie is famous as one of the revivalists at Acoma Pueblo, along with Lucy M. Lewis, Jessie Garcia, and a few others.  This jar is coil-built and made from red Acoma clay. The jar has a slightly intented shoulder and a turned out rim.  The neck has mountain, rain, and water designs.  Around the body of the jar are stylized fish.  The jar is painted with bee-weed and it was traditionally fired. The jar is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Marie Z. Chino”.   It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.

Marie Z. Chino

Marie Zieu Chino is one of the great matriarchs of Acoma pueblo. Her children and grandchildren are numerous and include potters Grace Chino, Rose Chino, Tena Garcia, Carol Chino, and others. Her pottery forms are amazingly uniform and renowned for being a perfect blend of form and design. Marie Z. Chino's pottery can be found in the book "14 Families in Pueblo Pottery," along with numerous other publications.
