Chino, Marie Z. – Water Jar with Acoma Birds and Flowers (1970s)
$ 3,300.00
This is a classically designed water jar by Marie Z. Chino. The piece is from the 1970s and it is a tightly painted piece that incorporates classic Acoma imagery. The jar has sections with large Acoma parrots. They are surrounded by plant designs and diamond shaped rainbows. The designs utilize the open white space to add to the impact of the imagery. I think this is often the genius of Marie’s pottery, as it is not the designs, but how she utilized the negative space to give her designs more impact. The jar is painted with bee-weed (a plant) and red/orange clay slips and then traditionally fired. The complex pattern has a very dynamic appearance to the eye. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair. It is signed on the bottom, “Marie Z. Chino”.
