This is a classic water jar by Marie Z. Chino.  Marie is renowned as one of the revivalists at Acoma Pueblo, alongside Lucy M. Lewis, Jessie Garcia, and a few others.  This jar is thin-walled and a classic Acoma shape with a high shoulder and short neck.  The jar is painted with four heartline deer.  They are all looking backward.  The heartline deer are classic to both Acoma and Zuni pottery, with the heartline signifying the center, spirit or, “heart” of the animal.  The deer are painted with bee-weed (black) and red clay for the heartline.  The jar was traditionally fired.  It is signed, “Marie Z. Chino”.  It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.

Marie Zieu Chino is one of the great matriarchs of Acoma pueblo. Her children and grandchildren are numerous and include potters Grace Chino, Rose Chino, Tena Garcia, Carol Chino, and others. Her pottery forms are amazingly uniform and renowned for being a perfect blend of form and design. Marie Z. Chino's pottery can be found in the book "14 Families in Pueblo Pottery," along with numerous other publications.
