This is an early wedding vase by Marie Z. Chino. Marie is famous as one of the revivalists at Acoma Pueblo, along with Lucy M. Lewis, Jessie Garcia, and a few others. This wedding vase is thin-walled with a round body, symmetric spouts, and a handle. The piece is fully painted with interlocking bird wings that are filled in with thin lines! It is a very complicated and elegant design. Even the top of the handle is painted with thin lines. The vase was traditionally fired so there are some very slight color variations to the white. It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair. The jar is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Marie Z. Chino”. It has a blue ribbon from the 1962 Gallup Ceremonials. It is a classic piece where shape, history, and design are in perfect balance!
