Cling, Alice – Jar with Corn Husk Design

5.25"w x 5.25"h

$ 300.00

This jar by Alice Cling has a deep coloration from the firing.  Alice Cling is one of the great names in the revival of Navajo pottery in the 1980s. This jar is coil-built, stone polished around the neck, and striated corn husk designs around the round shoulder.  Did you know that she actually uses a dry corn cob to texture the surface of the jar?  This jar is her classic shape with a high shoulder and short polished neck.  The surface is very textural in feeling but the coloration of the firing is so dynamic!  The colors on this jar swirl and range from black to red.  The jar was covered in pinon-pitch after the firing, a continuation of the traditional Navajo pottery when the pitch was used to make the pottery utilitarian.  The jar is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Alice Cling”.  Alice has won numerous awards for her pottery and has been featured in books such as “Legacy of Generations.”
