Curran, Ursula – Water Jar with Avanyu and Old Style Feathers

1.75"w x 1.75"h

$ 300.00

Ursula Curran is a daughter of noted potter Dolores Curran and Alvin Curran.  She is named after her grandmother, noted potter Ursulita Naranjo.  Ursula is known for her intricately painted miniature pottery.  This jar is fully polished red and intricately painted with buff clay.   Amazingly, she has to paint each piece up to five times to get the color of the matte-painted areas deep and consistent enough!  The jar has a round shoulder and a short neck.  The neck is painted with old-style feathers. Around the side of the jar are clouds, an avanyu, and rain designs near the base.  It is very intricately painted for the size!  Not only does it take multiple layers of clay to paint the designs, but all the design work must be done before firing. The jar is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Ursula Curran”.
