Da, Popovi- Gunmetal Bowl with Feather and Lightning Design (1971)

$ 4,000.00

Popovi Da was a son of noted potter, Maria Martinez.  While he worked with her painting designs on her pottery, he also created a few pieces on his own beginning in 1962.  He was planning to continue making pottery on his own after Maria retired but unfortunately passed away before this could occur.  His pottery pieces are definitely a rarity among Pueblo pottery and it is not often that we come across his work.  This is a classic bowl that is fully polished and painted around the shoulder.  The design has two sections with eagle feathers and two sections with lightning and cloud patterns.  The bowl is very highly polished and fired to a gunmetal coloration.  The gunmetal is more evident above the shoulder than below.  The piece is signed on the bottom, “Popovi 371” which is the firing date of March 1971.  That makes this a very late piece of his pottery as he passed away in 1971.  The bowl is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair and it is certainly an important addition to any collection!
