Tony Da is a name synonymous with innovative pottery and paintings. However, before he became famous for his pottery he began drawing in the 1960’s. He was the son of noted potter Popovi Da and the grandson of Maria Martinez. This is one of about five pen and ink drawings that he did early in his career. Virtually all the other are in public collections. This piece is one of his grandfather, Julian Martinez. Note the intricacy and precision pointilism and nearly draftsman like quality of his drawing. The piece is framed in acid free mats. There is some minor discoloration in the paper on the face. The painting comes with the original postcard concerning the original purchase of the piece. Tony wrote, “Let me apologize for the delay. I did not use the photograph which we had originally talked about because I ran across another that I thought was far better. I’m quite satisfied the way it came out and reluctant to part with it. It’s the best I’ve done so far and I hope you enjoy it as much as I have drawing it. Respectfully, Tony D’A“. This piece is certainly an important addition to any collection of work by Tony Da or San Ildefonso art.
