Duran, Anthony – 9″ Tall Micaceous Picuris Water Jar (1990s)

9"w x 9.5"h

$ 650.00

Anthony Duran (1956-2009) was one of the few potters from Picuris Pueblo.  He was known for his use of micaceous clay and traditional shapes. This piece is coil-built and has an elegant form.  It is a classic water jar with a round shoulder and turned-out rim. The ajr is made from micaceous clay and slipped with mica.  It is spectacular coloration with slight fire-clouds on the surface from the traditional firing.  Micaceous pottery is always exciting as it challenges both the artist and viewer to look closely at form and surface.  The rich coloration on Anthony’s pottery is always striking.  It is signed on the bottom, “AD”.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
