This new tile by Jason Garcia is part of his Corn Maiden series, which features young Pueblo women in traditional dress for the Corn Dance and placing them in a modern context. This tile has a young Corn Maiden dancer standing at the Pueblo with the kivas in the background. There is a Ferris Wheel and tent in the background as well. The piece is entitled, “Bubbles,” and she is blowing bubbles into the air. They are well-painted and float up to Jason’s signature raincloud. For Jason, the raincloud is a connection to the polychrome pottery of artists such as Lela and Van Gutierrez. The piece is made from native clay and painted with native clay slips. It is signed with his Tewa name, Okuu Pin, which means Turtle Mountain.
