Garcia, Jason – “Martyrs of 1680” Tile

5" x 4.5"

$ 350.00

This tile is part of an early series by Jason Garcia. This tile is entitled “The Martyrs of 1680” and on the back is a list of all the priest martyrs who were killed during the Pueblo Revolt of 1680. On the front is the burning Pueblo church and one of the priests who were hung.  The Pueblo Revolt drove the Spanish out of the New Mexico area for nearly two decades but it was not without loss of life.  It was also a reaction to the suppression of Native religions which were an impetus for the Revolt.  The tile is made from native clay.  All of the colors are derived from Native clay and it is traditionally fired. It is signed on the back.
