Garcia, Jason – “Tewa Tales of Suspense! #100” Clay Tile Set of Two Large Tiles

Left Tile: 8.75" x 13" - ON HOLD - $5,300 Right Tile: 8.75" x 13"

This is one of the few double-tile sets from Jason Garcia.  The piece is #100 in his series of “Tewa Tales of Suspense”.  I remember when he made is first tile nearly 20 years ago!  This is a set of two large tiles, which Jason said was meant to be like a “Double Fold” cover. Each piece is made from native clay, painted with native clay slips, and traditionally fired.  Each piece is inspired by graphic novels and early comic book art and the Pueblo Revolt of 1680.  The date on each of the two pieces “Pajogeri XXXIII” meaning Summer 2023.  One tile has a Franciscan Monk and a Conquistador with the Kiva in the background along with the flames and clouds.  The second cover has two Pueblo Warriors.  One with a shield and one with a bow and arrow.  In the background is a Pueblo church.  On the bottom corner of each is “100” for issue number 100.  In the sky are his signature clouds, which have become a signature of Jason’s art.  The coloration on these pieces is striking with the clay showing through and the subtle sky.  Note as well how the clouds in the background carry over from one tile to the next!  I had a museum mount made for the two pieces so that they could be displayed separately or as one object.  Definitely an important moment his Jason’s artistic history!   Both pieces are signed with his Tewa name, Okuu Pin, which means Turtle Mountain.
