This is one of the few double-tile sets from Jason Garcia.  The piece is #99 in his series of “Tewa Tales of Suspense”.  The larger tile is the “cover” and the smaller tile is meant to look like one of the panels from inside the comic.  Each piece is made from native clay, painted with native clay slips, and traditionally fired.  Each piece is inspired by graphic novels and early comic book art and the Pueblo Revolt of 1680.  The piece has “Spring XXIII” as the date, meaning Spring 2023.  The larger tile has a Pueblo Warrior in the center with a bow and arrow.  Note how her hair is only half done, which is part of the story of the “Warrior Maiden”, where she was called to defend the village in the midst of having her hair put into the classic “whorls”.  In the background, in silhouette, there are two more Warrior Maidens.  The are his signature clouds and a small raincloud in the sky, which is a signature of Jason’s art.  The coloration on this piece is striking with the clay showing through and the subtle sky.  The smaller panel is in black-and-white with the mother putting the girl’s hair into the whorls. Through the window, you can see the invaders coming. There is her bow and quiver on the wall.  The combination of pieces is wonderful. I had a museum mount made for the two pieces so that they could be displayed as one object.  Both pieces are signed with his Tewa name, Okuu Pin, which means Turtle Mountain.
