Gonzales, Rose – Jar with Carved Clouds and Rain Design (1961) Ribbon

7"w x 7"h

$ 900.00

Rose Gonzales is often considered the first at San Ildefonso Pueblo to make carved pottery. However, over the course of her career, she created a variety of styles, including plainware and painted and carved pottery.  This jar has a classic storage jar shape with a high, round shoulder and a short neck. The jar is carved on the sides with cloud and rain designs. They are carved in her “cameo style”.  The piece was traditionally fired to a deep black coloration.  It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Rose”.  It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
