Gonzales, Rose – Red Bowl with Mountain and Cloud Designs (1930’s)
This is a striking early bowl piece by San Ildefonso potter Rose Gonzales. She is often considered the first at San Ildefonso Pueblo to make carved pottery. However, over the course of her career, she created a variety of styles including plainware, painted, and carved pottery. This bowl is fully polished red and then the design is painted with a red clay slip, creating the “red-on-red” style The bowl is a deep red coloration and a strong contrast to the painted designs. The imagery has mountain and cloud patterns. The bowl is signed on the bottom, “Rose” and it is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.
