Gonzales, Tse-Pe – Black-and-Sienna Jar with Bear Lid, Turquoise (1990s)

4"w x 6.5"h (w/ lid)

$ 1,100.00

Tse-Pe Gonzales was a son of noted potter Rose Gonzales.  This is an unusual piece of his work.  The jar and lid are both slipped with mica clay and they are each stone polished to a high shine. The jar and lid were traditionally fired black.  The jar is two-toned sienna with an inset turquoise stone in the center.   The lid is interesting as the part that fits into the jar is silver and the edge of it is inlaid with turquoise. The clay bear is attached to the top of the silver.  Tse-Pe took a class to learn to make jewelry in the 1970s and often incorporated silver into his work.  It is signed on the bottom “TP” which is his hallmark. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.  Definitely a creative and unusual piece of his pottery!
