Tse-Pe Gonzales was a son of noted potter Rose Gonzales. This jar is from 1997. The jar is coil-built and has a carved avanyu. It is not often that we see Tse-Pe’s pottery with carved designs as opposed to etched ones. The jar is carved in the cameo style of his mother, Rose. The piece is slipped with mica and then was fired black. After the firing, it was two-toned sienna on the rim and the body of the avanyu. There is a single inset turquoise hei-shi bead for the eye of the avanyu. The jar is signed on the bottom with Tse-Pe’s hallmark, “TP”. It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
