Tse-Pe Gonzales was a son of noted potter Rose Gonzales.  This jar is from 1997.  The jar is coil-built and has a carved avanyu.  It is not often that we see Tse-Pe’s pottery with carved designs as opposed to etched ones. The jar is deeply carved and fully polished.  The avanyu spiral around the entire surface of the jar.  The background area is slipped with pink-colored micaceous clay.  There is a single inset turquoise hei-shi bead for the eye of the avanyu.  The jar is signed on the bottom with Tse-Pe’s hallmark, “TP”. It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
