Tse-Pe Gonzales was a son of noted potter Rose Gonzales.  This is one of the few large plates we have seen of his work.  The piece is etched with a realistic turtle.  Around the edge is a water design.  There are two large inset pieces of turquoise along with a small turquoise hei-shi bead for the eye of the turtle.  The piece is slipped with mica, which creates a sparkle on the surface of the piece.  The background area it textured where he has etched away from the clay, which is typical for his pottery. The plate is signed on the back with Tse-Pe’s hallmark, “TP”. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
