Lela Gutierrez began making pottery in the 1930s with her husband, Van Gutierrez. After Van passed away in 1956 she continued to make pottery with her son, Luther Gutierrez. This is a large plate that is fully painted. There is an avanyu encircling the piece with a raincloud in the center. The avanyu is complex in design with a flowing appearance and using the natural color of the clay as part of the design. The center has a single raincloud and note the tiny thunderbird in the center cloud! There are at least 10 different colors of clay that are used in this piece. Definitely a fascinating piece! It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair. It is signed, “Lela Van” on the bottom.
