Gutierrez, Lela & Van – Polychrome Jar with Avanyu (1930s)

4.5"w x 5.5"h

$ 1,100.00

Lela Gutierrez began making pottery in the 1930s with her husband, Van Gutierrez.  After Van passed away in 1956, she continued to make pottery with her son, Luther Gutierrez. This jar is one of their classic shapes.  It has a tall shape and it is fully painted. The rim has an early dark red clay.  The center of the jar has a complex avanyu encircling the piece.  Note all the various colors including green, black, white, pink, orange, and purple clays on a tan background.  This coloration with the purples is typical of their pottery in the 1930s.  The avanyu is complex and near the base are two bands with old-style avanyu painted in black on the red surface.  Definitely a fascinating piece! It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.   It is signed, “Van / Lela” on the bottom.
