Margaret Lou Gutierrez was a daughter of noted potters Tonita & Juan Roybal.  She was the sister of Marie Roybal and JD Royal.   She began making pottery in the 1970s and this is one of her pieces from the 1980s. This plate is fully polished on the front. It is painted “black-on-black” with 32 feathers. Each feather is thin and very sharp.  Her style of painting is easily identifiable.  The plate was fired to a glossy black coloration.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.  It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Margaret Lou Gutierrez”.  It is hard to see the signature in the photo, but it is clear on the piece.
