This is a large polychrome wedding vase is Margaret and Luther Gutierrez. Margaret would make the pottery and Luther, her brother would paint the surface. They were one of the few potters creating polychrome pottery at Santa Clara. They began working together after the passing of their mother, Lela Gutierrez in 1966. This wedding vase is from the late 1960s, which can be seen in the coloration of the clays and the complexity of the design. There are Yei figures on the spouts on each side. Around the body of the jar is a very detailed water serpent encircling the piece. Note the variety of designs making up the body of the avanyu! Below the avanyu are waves. It is an exceptional piece of their work in the complexity of the design. All of the colors are from natural clay slips. It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair. It is signed on the bottom, “Margaret/Luther”.
