Gutierrez, Margaret & Luther – Polychrome Jar with Avanyu (1960s)

2"w x 2.25"h

$ 175.00

This is a small polychrome jar by Margaret and Luther Gutierrez. Margaret would make the pottery and Luther, her brother would paint the surface.  They were one of the few potters creating polychrome pottery at Santa Clara.  They began working together after the passing of their mother, Lela Gutierrez in 1966.  This jar is from the 1960s, which can be seen in the coloration of the clays.  The jar has a water serpent (avanyu) encircling the piece.  As it is turned there are cloud and rain designs. There is a light blue coloration of clay, which is the indicator of an earlier piece of their pottery.  All of the colors are from natural clay slips.   It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.  It is signed on the bottom, “Margaret/Luther”.
