Gutierrez, Margaret & Luther – Polychrome Owl with Animal Handles
Margaret and Luther Gutierrez were known for their polychrome pottery. Margaret would make the pottery and then it would be painted by her brother Luther. The colors are all derived from natural clay slips. This is one of her their classic large owls. The owl figures are distinctive as they had different eyes. The body of the piece has very tightly painted cloud, rain, and lightning designs. On the back, there are stylized feather designs. This piece is unusual as there are handles on the piece. Each of the handles is an animal that is painted. It almost reminds me of a storyteller, but then it also has the look of one of their jars with handles. Either way, it is an exceptional piece of their pottery in creativity and design! The jar is signed on the bottom, “Margaret/Luther”. It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
