This is a “reclining” turtle Margaret and Luther Gutierrez. The figure was made by Margaret and painted by her brother, Luther. Typical of their turtles, the face is whimsical. The legs are each painted with intricate designs. One leg has a frog, turtle, and salamander. The next has bugs and a bird. The third has a snail, ant, and grasshopper, and finally, there is one with a crab, fish, and spider. This style of painting on the legs is indicative of their work in the late 1960s and early 1970’s. All the various colors are derived from natural clay slips. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair. It is signed on the bottom, “Margaret/Luther”.
