Gutierrez, Margaret & Luther – Three Sided Bowl with Avanyu and Feather Designs (1970s)

6"w x 5"h

$ 975.00

This is a three-sided bowl by Margaret & Luther Gutierrez.  Margaret would make the pottery and her brother Luther would paint the designs using natural clay slips.  This jar has flat sides that create the “triangle” shaped opening.  Two sides each have an avanyu and they meet at the point of the bowl.  The body of each avanyu is intricately painted with designs.  The back panel of the bowl has a feather design that extends downward.  The bowl is very complex in design, which indicates an earlier date, as does the use of some of the colors of clay.  There are at least six different colors of clay used on this jar!  It is certainly Luther’s painting at its best with the tight lines and complexity of small imagery making up the bodies of each avanyu.  All the various colors are from natural clay slips and this was a signature style of their work. The jar is signed on the bottom, “Margaret / Luther”.  It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
