Juana Leno is one of the four revivalist matriarchs of contemporary Acoma pottery (including Marie Z. Chino, Lucy Lewis, and Jessie Garcia). She was a daughter of Lupita and Jose Vallo and learned to make pottery from her grandmother Eulilia Vallo. This smaller bowl has a wonderful shape with a wider shoulder that slightly indents inward and then curves up to the rim. Lena was masterful at her forms and creating pieces that were thin-walled.  The design is an interlocking cloud pattern which encircles the piece.  It is painted in two rows.  The bowl was traditionally fired so there is a slight coloration on the surface. The piece is from the early 1970s.  It is signed on the bottom, “J Leno”. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.  It is a classic piece of pottery by this important Acoma Pueblo potter!
