Manymules, Samuel – Square Water Jar with Fire Clouds

4.75"w x 5.25"h

$ 900.00

This is an unusual shape water jar by Samuel Manymules.  The piece has flat sides, giving it a square shape. The piece has a triple shoulder and then a turned-out rim.  It is coil-built and then slipped with red clay and then traditionally fired.  The smoke during the firing created the various blushes that encircle the piece.  It is easy to see in the photos that the colors range from red to black and almost seem to create their own designs!  After the firing, the jar is covered with pine pitch in the traditional way expected of Navajo pottery.  It is extraordinary vessels like this that keep Samuel among the top Navajo potters working today.  It is signed on the bottom.
