This is a tall melon jar by Samuel Manymules.  The jar is coil-built and has a tall shape with a short neck.  The jar is stone-polished tan, the natural color of the clay.  The piece has seventeen ribs pushed out in the clay.  It is always amazing to think about how Samuel is able to maintain symmetry in each rib just using his hands to shape them!  The jar was traditionally fired, creating striking colorations on the surface.  After the firing, it was covered in pinon pitch in the traditional way expected of Navajo pottery. It is signed on the bottom, “SM”.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
