Montoya, Eudroa – Santa Ana Open Bowl with Cloud and Rain Designs (1970s)

6.25"w x 3"h

$ 450.00

Eudora Montoya is the most well-recognized potter from Santa Ana Pueblo. In 1972 she began teaching Santa Ana women the art of pottery making. She had 17 students in her first class. Only 5 or 6 of them continued making pottery. Although Eudora’s pottery was traditional in materials and construction, generally her designs were creations of her own.  In 1973 she visited the White House with other Pueblo potters.  This open bowl is creative and highly detailed in design.  The inside is stone polished red. The outside has cloud and rain patterns encircling the piece.  They alternate with a total of eight designs.   The bottom is polished red, the same as the interior.  The bowl was traditionally fired so there are color slight variation on the surface.  It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.  It is signed on the bottom, “Eudora Montoya, Santa Ana Pueblo”.
