Nampeyo, Camille “Hisi” – 14″ Wide Polychrome Moth and Bird Tail Design Jar (1990s)

14"w x 6"h

$ 6,500.00

WOW!  This is certainly one of the largest and most colorful pieces we have had by Camille “Hisi” Quotskuyva. She learned to make pottery from her mother, Dextra Quotskuyva.  She is a sister of noted painter Dan Namingha and a descendant of Nampeyo of Hano, Annie Healing, and Rachel Nampeyo.  Hisi is known for her use of traditional imagery and the delicate painting of her designs.  This large jar is a classic Sikyatki shape with a wide shoulder and sloping sides. The jar has large butterflies on each side.  They are painted with bee-weed (black) and then highlighted with red and white clay areas.  Note the very thin lines and tiny dots.  Separating the moths are bit tail designs.   Again, the colorations are striking with the use of color and fine-line.  It is a large jar that is complicated in design.  It was traditionally fired to create the blushes on the surface.  The jar is from the early 1990s.  It is signed, “Hisi Nampeyo”.  It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.  Today, Hisi makes very little pottery but her work remains iconic for the time!
