Nampeyo, Iris – Mini Buff Seedpot with Corn Design (1980s)

2"w x 1.25"h

$ 300.00

Iris Nampeyo was a daughter of Fannie Nampeyo and was well known for her elegant asymmetrical vessels with corn as part of the design in relief.  Iris began using the corn in relief on the surface of her pottery in the early 1980s. The corn is symbolic of being part of the Corn Clan.  The surface of the seedpot is stone polished and the corn on the top is in applique relief.  In the early 1980s the corn cob was more pronounced with a thinner husk at the base.   By the late 80’s, the corn was more distinctive, like on this seedpot. The corn is matte while the remainder of the seedpot is fully polished.  There is a simplicity and elegance in her pottery.  This piece is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Iris Nampeyo”.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
