This is one of the most intricately designed pieces we have seen by Jody Naranjo. The jar is entitled “Sunset”. It is fully polished and etched with design. In the center, there is a scene from Santa Clara Feast Day. There are very tightly etched pueblo buildings. In front of them are two deer dancers, the Pueblo Church, and a brick building. Note all the TINY bricks etched on the building! There are also two women holding pottery, a water jar, and a wedding vase. There is even her famous “Crazy Horse” rider (which usually represents Jody herself). The complexity and detail in each area of the design is exceptional, even to the mountains in the background! The top and bottom of the jar are fully etched with a kiva design. Jody said of this design:
“As for the design on the top and the bottom, it was the kiva step in the beginning. My family used them but just parts of them, the top half of the design. I started making them just around the top of the pot in one row. Then it became two rows and three rows, and then I started filling in between them. Now it looks more like a textile, and it’s a signature pattern that I do on everything.” Jody Naranjo, Spoken Through Clay
The jar was fired a deep, dark brown coloration. The rim is asymmetric in the shape of the mountains. The jar is signed: “Jody Naranjo” and it is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.
