Naranjo, Johnathan – Long Neck Jar with Deer Dancers and Deer

4.5"w x 7"h

This is a complex design long neck jar by Johnathan Naranjo.  The shape is elegant with a round body and an elongated neck.  The entire piece is fully polished.  There are three Pueblo Deer dancers etched into the clay.  Each is in a different position.  The various shades of red and tan are achieved by lightly scraping away layers of the polished surface.  This technique, while difficult and time-consuming, is one for which Johnathan has become famous.  It gives his etched designs added detail, realism, and depth.  Check out the subtle realism in the faces and the way he was able to etch the shirts!  You can see the shadows and the folds of the cloth.  In front of the Dancers are shadows of deer.  They are lightly outlined and note the little details on the neck and chin of each deer!  Around the shoulder are cloud designs.  I really like how he is able to etch designs to create layers of design so that you can see the deer at times in front of the clouds and all are in front of the Dancers.  Amazing!   It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Johnathan Naranjo 2023”.  Johnathan has won numerous awards for his pottery and he is definitely one of the young potters to watch!
