Robert Cleto Nichols is known for his deep carved pottery. Each piece is coil-built, carved, and stone polished. This bowl has a fish as the main design. As the bowl is turned the fish is made up of kiva step and melon rib designs. Then there is a second, smaller fish! Note the depth of the carving on the bowl. It was traditionally fired black and signed on the bottom in the clay, “Robert Cleto Nichols”. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.

Robert Cleto Nichols is a grandson of Severa Tafoya and son of Mela Tafoya. His aunts Lydia and Angela Baca were also well known for their pottery. He is a cousin to potters Paul Speckled Rock, Tina Garcia, Greg Garcia and David Baca. Robert is known for his deeply carved pottery that is very light in weight and highly polished.
