Seferina Ortiz was the matriarch of a family of renowned potters, including Virgil Ortiz, Janice Ortiz, Inez Ortiz, and Lisa Holt. This is an exceptional storyteller by Seferina.  The mother is holding four children in her arms.  It has Seferina’s classic style of face.  But most importantly, check out the shirt and the apron.  The shirt is fully painted with tiny flowers in red.  They are on the front and the back.  She has additional flowers on her apron and is wearing traditional white women’s mocassins.  There are even the little details of the flowers on her collar and the lace on her sleeves!  It is simply wonderful in detail and design.  The figure is slipped with white clay and then painted with a red clay slip and wild spinach (black).  The piece is signed on the bottom, “Seferina Ortiz”.  It was traditionally fired and in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.  Definitely a classic figure by this historically important potter!
