Seferina Ortiz was the matriarch of a family of renowned potters, including Virgil Ortiz, Janice Ortiz, and Lisa Holt. This is an unusual bear by Seferina.  It is the first time we have had one of her red bears!  The bear is slipped with red Cochiti clay and is holding a “honey pot”. The bear has its paws to its mouth, tasting the honey.  The bowl says “honey”. It is a charming piece! The black is wild spinach that is painte don the piece.  It is charming and a creative addition to the work of Seferina Ortiz.  The piece is signed on the bottom, “Seferina Ortiz”.   It was traditionally fired and is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.  Definitely an exceptional piece by this historically important potter!
