Seferina Ortiz is the matriarch of a family of renowned potters, including Virgil Ortiz, Janice Ortiz, and Lisa Holt. This is a charming canteen. It is coil-built and painted with a white clay slip and wild spinach for the black. The canteen is from the 1980s. The design is one of her iconic “storyteller” canteens. The canteen has three kids that are playing on the top of the canteen. Each one is different in clothes. The canteen has a rain design around the top. There are flowers on the handles and a raincloud design painted on the neck. The piece is painted with bee-weed (black) and red clay slips. The canteen is signed on the bottom “Seferina Ortiz”. It was traditionally fired and in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.
