Virgil Ortiz is known for his innovative style of Cochiti pottery, inspired by the Monos figures made at the pueblo in the 1880s. When Virgil first started making figurative pieces in clay, he made bear storytellers, much like the ones made by his mother, Seferina. This bear is made from native clay, slipped white, and painted with wild spinach (black) and red clay. The bear has a charming face and there are three bear cubs on the back. It is a longer piece with the bear reclining and its legs extended. This piece is a great view into the origins of this important contemporary Native artist. It is signed, “Virgil Ortiz”. The bear is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
