Ortiz, Virgil – “Contortionista” Acrobat Figure (2010)
$ 6,700.00
This is a classic acrobat figure by Virgil Ortiz. It was originally made as part of the “Contortionista” show in 2010. “Contortionista harkened back to the eroticism and wildness of the “circus freak shows” depicted in 1880s Cochiti Monos figures. Clay acrobats hung from the ceiling, while a dominatrix Ring Master led surrealistic clay animals by leather leashes. The centerpiece was a clay “VO” comprised of four acrobats intertwined to create Virgil’s now-famous logo. The sensuality of form, impossible body contortions, and masked faces made the group both mysterious and provocative.”. This figure is an amazing use of clay with the position of the arms and legs. The designs are sun and rain patterns. There is hair added to the top of the figure. It is signed with his hallmark. There is a museum mount made for the piece so that it seems to float in the air! It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
