Virgil Ortiz is known for his innovative style of Cochiti pottery. This jar is from 2003 and it it is made from native clay, coil-built, and painted with wild spinach (black) on a white kaolin clay background. The neck of the jar has the classic wild spinach design. Around the shoulder are cloud patterns. Along the side of the jar are corn plants and a traditional Cochiti cloud designs. Near the base are circular sun designs. The jar is from a period when Virgil was making more traditional pieces and within two years of this jar, he would being making his first pieces with faces and more innovative designs. The detail on this jar is exceptional. Note on the rim of the jar, Virgil has the traditional “spirit line” which is Virgil’s way of paying tribute to the traditions of Cochiti pottery. It has been traditionally fired outside. It is signed on the bottom with his name and cypher. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.
