This is a large olla by Anderson Peynetsa. The jar is a beautiful shape with a high sharp shoulder and a short neck. The high shoulder has just a slight edge to it and the heads of the deer peer just over the shoulder. The body of the jar is slipped with white clay and then painted with three rows of heartline deer. There are a total of 21 deer encircling the jar! Each deer is very tightly painted and they are stylized with thin legs. The heartline deer is a classic image in Zuni pottery, with the heart representing the strength and spirit of the animal. The rim has a cloud pattern and a spirit line painted into the pattern. The base of the jar is slipped with black clay. It is an elegant and striking vessel. It is signed, “A. Peynetsa 2023” on the bottom.
