Vernida Polacca Nampeyo is a great-granddaughter of Nampeyo of Hano and a granddaughter of Fannie Nampeyo. Her father, Harold Polacca, was a son of Fannie. She is a sister of noted potters Clinton Polacca and Reva Ami. Vernida is known for her finely painted traditionally designed Hopi pottery.  This bowl has a wide shoulder, in the classic Sikyakti style.  The bowl is fully painted with a migration pattern.  There are seven bird wings above the shoulder and seven below, for a total of 14.  Note the precision of Verndia’s painting.  It is painted with bee-weed and red clay and traditionally fired to create blushes on the surface. The bowl is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Vernida Polacca Nampeyo”.

Dextra Quotskuyva Nampeyo said of  the migration pattern:

“This is the one design that was really stressed for us to use, the migration pattern. Nothing but lines, representing the migration of all the people to all the places, including down below and up above. It has seven points at the top and bottom. All the x’s represent life from the bottom and top, telling you the universe is one.
