Vernida Polacca Nampeyo is a great-granddaughter of Nampeyo of Hano and a granddaughter of Fannie Nampeyo. Her father, Harold Polacca, was a son of Fannie. She is a sister of noted potters Clinton Polacca and Reva Ami. Vernida is known for her finely painted traditionally designed Hopi pottery. This jar has a high shoulder and a short neck. The shoulder of the jar is fully painted with a traditional eagle tail design. The wings are the swirls and the tail extends down over the side. It is painted with bee-weed (black) and a polished red clay slip near the neck. The lines are even and precise. The jar was traditionally fired to create the blushes on the surface. The jar is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Vernida Polacca Nampeyo”.
