Roller, Jordan – Four Shoulder Jar with Sharp Edges (2015)
This is an amazing jar by Jordan Roller. The shape is one of his creative forms which are water jar inspired. The jar undulates in and out creating FOUR sharp edges! There are two distinct bands of design. The top band has eagle feathers, much in the style of his grandmother, Toni Roller. The central band is his signature style of carving which is inspired by the movement of clouds but seems equally connected to graffiti styles. There are two polished sections and two matte sections. They are tightly carved and the contrast of matte and polished surfaces is striking. The bottom two bands are fully polished. There are two shoulders near the base, one very cloud, and the entire area is fully polished. Beyond the beauty of the carving and the polished surface is that the jar is surprisingly thin-walled. It is lighter than most carved vessels and that adds to the physical impact of the piece. It is signed on the bottom, “Jordan Roller”. It is from 2015 and it is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
