This is a classic shaped jar by Jordan Roller.  The low shoulder and the sloping neck are perfect for his carved designs.  This striking jar has two bands of carving. The top band is a feather pattern, which alternates between matte and polished surfaces.  The bottom row has all fully polished feathers.  Note the shape of the feathers at the bottom, as they are similar in form to the feathers carved by his grandmother, Toni Roller.  It may seem to be a simple design, and yet it perfectly matches the shape of the jar.  It also allows the firing to become the focus of the jar.  Jordan has fired the piece with to be a brown coloration and there are variations on the surface from the firing. The unique result is that the feather have spots and dots, much like on various eagle feathers.  Beyond the beauty of the carving and the polished surface is that the jar is surprisingly thin walled.  It is lighter than most carved vessels and that adds to the physical impact of the piece.  Jordan remains an important young potter to watch!
