Shawna Garcia-Rustin (b.1969) is from Acoma Pueblo. Patrick Rustin (b. 1970) is Apache from the San Carlos Reservation. He began making pottery in 1991 and created pieces with nearly paper-thin walls. During their time together, they won numerous awards for their pottery. This piece is coil-built and has their signature sculpted rim with interconnected pieces of clay. The jar has a carved lightning band on the top. Above the carved band it is painted with rain and cloud designs. Note all the thin lines! Below the carved band are rain clouds, wind, and fine lines at the base. Around the neck is a feather pattern and near the base is a cloud design. The rim has rain and cloud patterns painted on the three interlocking sections. It is highly detailed and striking in person as well, the piece feels like it is paper thin! The jar is from 2000 and it is signed, “Garcia-Rustin”. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
