Rachel Sahmie was a daughter of noted potter Priscilla Nampeyo and a descendant of Nampeyo of Hano. She was a sister of noted potters Jean Sahmie and Bonnie Sahmie. This jar has a round body and a short neck. It is painted on each side with red and tan clay paints along with bee-weed (black). The design on each side is a lizard. I thought this always looked like a fox or some other animal, but when I was at Dextra’s house working on Spoken Through Clay in 2015, I showed her a piece with this same design. She said it was a lizard, so that’s what I continue to call it. The background design is polished red and the lizard is painted in black. Above the lizards are bird wings. It was traditionally fired so that there are blushes and color variations around the surface. The jar is signed on the bottom “RS Nampeyo”. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
