Sahmie Nampeyo, Rachel – Jar with Star Designs
Rachel Sahmie is a daughter of noted potter Priscilla Nampeyo and a descendant of Nampeyo of Hano. She is a sister of noted potters Jean Sahmie and Bonnie Sahmie. This jar has a round shoulder and a short neck. The design around the side of the jar is a star scene with the rising and setting sun. The stars in the black panels are actually etched into the clay. Around the neck of the jar are a series of twelve dots (the sun), representing the year. The jar was traditionally fired which creates the blush on the surface. The jar is signed on the bottom with her name “R Sahmie”. It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.
